We promise you this in every bottle

Our wines come from the Ruwer Valley, a side valley of the Moselle, characterized by slate soils and a unique cool microclimate. We carefully pick and select our grapes by hand and work with only the best grapes to minimize yields. Our vineyards are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and the wines are produced in a purist manner. Sustainability, a sense of responsibility and fair cooperation are our top priorities.

slate crystal

estate wines with enormous aging potential

Our Schieferkristall skilfully combines the strengths of the region: low alcohol, cool fruit and plenty of minerality. Very fresh, cool nose with delicate citrus notes, white currants, a little lychee, plus a clear slate and spontaneous spice, light-footed like a ballerina but powerful like a punch from Bruce Lee. Our estate wine shows extraordinary aging potential with plenty of depth and potential.

Classification & Origin
VDP Gutswein

The grapes come predominantly from the Karthäuserhofberg, but also deliberately from Mertesdorf and Waldrach, in order to bring together the complete spectrum of the different terroirs of the Karthäuserhof in the only Gutswein.

Vertical Slate Crystal Selection

What is a vertical sample?

Quite simply: it shows how a wine develops over the years, how maturation and storage change it – and above all, what potential it holds.

Our Schieferkristall is the perfect example. It combines everything that defines our region: low alcohol, cool fruit, and pronounced minerality. Fresh citrus notes, white currants, a hint of lychee – along with the typical slate spice and that subtle spontaneous fermentation note. And because estate wines are the calling card of a winery, each vintage contains the very best from our vineyards in Eitelsbach, Mertesdorf, and Waldrach. Our Schieferkristall impressively demonstrates how well-aged an estate wine can be – with depth, finesse, and considerable aging potential.

food recommendation in detail

Hamachi (raw), sushi, steamed fish

The Schieferkristall wine impresses with its vibrant freshness and pronounced citrus aromas, which pair perfectly with raw hamachi and sushi. The well-integrated acidity and the subtle peppery finish harmonize ideally with steamed fish, enhancing its delicate flavors.

Karthäuserhof Etikett Eitelsbach

trademark

A globally unique trademark

The Eitelsbach stream runs through the garden in front of our main house, where Willhelm and Kathinka Rautenstrauch spent cool breaks in hot summers in the 19th century. To cool the Karthäuserhof wines, they put the bottles in the cold stream. But the labels came off and floated away. This is how Wilhelm Rautenstrauch invented our unmistakable neck label and a trademark that is unique worldwide.

Karthäuserhof Weinberg

locations of immeasurable value

That makes
the Karthäuserhofberg so legendary

Our monopoly location, the Karthäuserhofberg, is considered one of the most traditional and fascinating vineyards in Germany. The steep southwest slope of the Karthäuserhofberg in the Ruwer Valley ensures optimal sunlight and a special microclimate. The mineral-rich slate soil gives the wines an unmistakable finesse and elegance that reflects the terroir of the Karthäuserhofberg. Wine has been grown here for over 1000 years. This long history and the accumulated knowledge shape every wine that is produced here. The combination of these two grape varieties in the special location in particular ensures wines of great complexity, freshness and longevity.
