On Monday, August 19, 2024, the Karthäuserhof shone in an almost magical atmosphere. 90 invited guests, all equipped with hard hats, had gathered in front of the historic old wine press house, their eyes fixed on a crane that was lowering a large barrel, revealing the first bottle of the new Karthäuserhof BRUT .
What seemed like an unprecedented spectacle to the outside world was a very special moment for us, one we had been looking forward to for a long time: the first sparkling wine from the Karthäuserhof made in the style of Champagne. This was followed by exciting master classes from Mathieu Kauffmann and Dominik Völk and a cozy and festive conclusion. Accompanied by first-class cuisine and music, Mathieu Kauffmann's new creation was duly celebrated until late in the evening.
In 1858, Valentin Leonardy, the first generation of the current Karthäuserhof family, left a wish in his will that his winery would one day produce sparkling wines. Now Albert Behler, the seventh generation, has turned this wish into reality together with Mathieu Kauffmann.
A seven-generation-old vision
Perhaps it took Mathieu Kauffmann and his experience as a champagne expert, or perhaps centuries of experience with the best locations for the project: The Eitelsbach Karthäuserhofberg, for example, provides depth and structure. The Mertesdorfer locations, on the other hand, provide finesse and elegance. The Karthäuserhof Brut owes its impressive freshness to the cool locations in Waldrach. Through careful and precise selection of the hand-picked grapes, gentle pressing and subsequent maturation in stainless steel tanks and wooden barrels, the unparalleled complex character of the Ruwer terroir is already evident in the base wine. This was followed by the traditional 36-month yeast storage in the bottle. The result is a unique and Ruwer-typical composition of Riesling and Pinot Blanc grapes with a fine perlage and delicate aromas of fennel, lime and lemon with subtle brioche notes.
