We promise you this in every bottle

Our wines come from the Ruwer Valley, a side valley of the Moselle, characterized by slate soils and a unique cool microclimate. We carefully pick and select our grapes by hand and work with only the best grapes to minimize yields. Our vineyards are cultivated according to biodynamic principles and the wines are produced in a purist manner. Sustainability, a sense of responsibility and fair cooperation are our top priorities.

Eitelsbacher Riesling Alte Reben 2023

50-year-old vines for eternity

Our Riesling “Alte Reben” (Old Vines) displays a hint of brioche on the nose, along with dried herbs and a touch of rosehip. These are complemented by a savory spiciness and notes of sun-ripened stone fruit. On the palate, our Prince Charming impresses with a perfect balance of vibrant acidity and creamy texture, supported by crystalline minerality. The long finish is characterized by the freshness typical of the Ruwer Valley and a subtle peppery spice.

In the words of the plant manager

Dominik remembers the class of 2023.

When Dominik thinks back to the 2023 vintage, he thinks primarily of a year full of extremes – and of a team that mastered these challenges with great care and dedication. Winter and spring were characterized by exceptionally high rainfall. Between January and February, it hardly ever seemed to stay dry – a strain on the soil, but also on vineyard planning. Then came the sudden change: Summer was extremely dry. Hardly any rain, but long periods of heat – a challenge for both vines and people. Autumn finally brought heavy rainfall again – right at harvest time. This made the selective hand-harvesting, which the team carried out with the utmost precision, all the more important. Only the best, healthiest grapes made it to the cellar. Every plot was checked multiple times, every decision made with care. The result: Wonderful, precise, and elegant wines from the 2023 vintage.

Eitelsbacher Riesling Alte Reben 2023

food recommendation in detail

Our 2023 Old Vines has character – and loves dishes with depth and soul. With mushroom risotto with thyme and aged Parmesan, it brings just the right blend of creaminess and freshness to make the umami of the mushrooms shine. With ratatouille and roasted rosemary oil, it harmonizes perfectly with herbs and vegetables, and with grilled eggplant with miso and sesame, it embraces the grilled aubergine with miso and sesame with its delicate spiciness and mineral elegance.

Karthäuserhof Etikett Eitelsbach

trademark

A globally unique trademark

The Eitelsbach stream runs through the garden in front of our main house, where Willhelm and Kathinka Rautenstrauch spent cool breaks in hot summers in the 19th century. To cool the Karthäuserhof wines, they put the bottles in the cold stream. But the labels came off and floated away. This is how Wilhelm Rautenstrauch invented our unmistakable neck label and a trademark that is unique worldwide.

Karthäuserhof Weinberg

locations of immeasurable value

That makes
the Karthäuserhofberg so legendary

Our monopoly location, the Karthäuserhofberg, is considered one of the most traditional and fascinating vineyards in Germany. The steep southwest slope of the Karthäuserhofberg in the Ruwer Valley ensures optimal sunlight and a special microclimate. The mineral-rich slate soil gives the wines an unmistakable finesse and elegance that reflects the terroir of the Karthäuserhofberg. Wine has been grown here for over 1000 years. This long history and the accumulated knowledge shape every wine that is produced here. The combination of these two grape varieties in the special location in particular ensures wines of great complexity, freshness and longevity.
